The Chairman of the Aberystwyth People In Partnership Association, Elizabeth Evans, was named Welsh European of The Year for 2003-2004, for her work for town twinning during the 30th anniversary of their twinning with Saint-Brieuc. Elizabeth was presented the award by Mr James Carroll, Consul General of Ireland at a recent ceremony in Brecon.

In May this year Elizabeth and her team organised a European Conference of Twin Towns in Aberystwyth to discuss European enlargement and twinning related issues. Participants included Aberystwyth`s twin towns in France and Germany and a network of towns throughout Europe that the Aberystwyth/Saint-Brieuc Committee have formed friendships with, including one of the candidate countries, Cyprus.

Ceredigion MP Simon Thomas, a representative from the Polish Embassy in London and Dr Tomas Christiensen of the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, all spoke at a weekend seminar on European enlargement.

"Without European funding through the Town Twinning programme and a financial grant from Aberystwyth Town Council, none of this would have been possible," she said.
