Twinning first took place in 1920 after World War One. Currently there are over 2000 twinning links within the UK. 50% involve towns and cities in France, 25% in Germany and the remaining 25% in USA, China, the Commonwealth and other Countries. Twinning continues to be very popular across the European Union and is co-ordinated in the UK by the Local Government International Bureau (LGIB) in London - www.lgib.gov.uk
The advantages of Twinning are many e.g.
Over 70 towns in Wales have twinning links, including Aberystwyth, which has been twinned with St Brieuc in Brittany for 30 years. All twinning activities between Aberystwyth and St Brieuc are now co-ordinated via the Aberystwyth and St Brieuc People in Partnership Association, a new independent organisation. Formerly the Aberystwyth Twinning Committee, (a committee of Aberystwyth Town Council), the new Association will have greater freedoms to seek financial and other support for its activities from a wider range of organisations than was possible under the old arrangements.

Signing the new Twinning Charter during the 30th Anniversary celebrations at St Brieuc |
The Association recently staged a very successful 30th Anniversary event in Aberystwyth to which a number of countries across Europe were invited and a delegation also went to St Brieuc for the 30th Anniversary celebrations arranged by the Twinning Committee there.
The Association is continuing to develop and welcomes new members to help with both the committee work and the various other activities that take place in the name of twinning. The Association is able to recruit to both individual/family memberships and corporate membership e.g. the Health Trust is a corporate member.
